The real electric Mustang

Article by Tobias Selerit

Built by Ford Racing, the Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 is a purpose-built machine for speed.

It has a classic layout for a drag racing car: rear-wheel-drive and front motor. Front motors—in plural—to be exact!

This Mustang has two electric motors mounted in a unique way: side-by-side. These Helix motors deliver 900 kW each.

What arrives from two motors via a driveshaft to the rear wheels is 1640 kW or 2,200 hp.

The Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 uses a 5-speed transmission to keep maximum torque at the rear wheels at every moment. The Ford-patented special centrifugal clutch is used that allows controlled slip during gear shifts and keeps the car stable.

The result is extreme: the electric Mustang runs the quarter mile in just 6.76 seconds. On the 1,320 ft / 402 m race track, the car reaches a speed of 222 mph / 357 km/h.

The little roller skate wheels help the car not to lift its nose during the start. The deceleration parachutes help to stop the car at the finish.
